Development Engineer (R&D)

Role Description

This is a Development Engineering role in Titon’s Mechanical Ventilation team in the Research and Development function located in Haverhill, Suffolk. The role focuses on Titon’s powered ventilation product portfolio and the timely delivery of new and improved products according to Titon’s Product Development Process.

The overarching objective is to bring the right products to market, those that our customers want to buy and that are efficient to manufacture. Relevant engineering skills and experiences is a pre-requisite and as the ability to demonstrate strong cross-functional collaboration capabilities and the effective coordination of project tasks.

Job Description

 
Core accountabilities: 
  • Maintain knowledge of the UK mechanical ventilation market and industry trends. Be close to the customer(s) (Installer, Developer and End User).
  • Detailed analysis of competitor products and shared learning.
  • Contribute to, or lead, product development projects including requirements management, product specifications, concepts, design, test and validation. Ensure project deliverables are made according to time, cost and quality criteria.
  • Make deliverables to the product technical file ensuring product compliance with relevant legislation and standards.
  • Facilitate timely decision making with internal stakeholders and external suppliers, consultants and partners. Be able to lead the team and lead new initiatives.
  • Work closely with R&D team functions/member to utilise engineering resources, e.g. product test, electrical/software design, efficiently and effectively.
  • Produce and demonstrate detailed and valuable engineering solutions and product designs for concept, prototype and production phases.
  • Lead technical and product reviews, e.g. brainstorming, design reviews, DfMA, lessons learned.
  • Maintain and present clear task/project plans and maintain critical deadlines. Resolve blocking issues.
  • Maintain confidential information and act to protect ideas and inventions, e.g. patent filing
  • Support routine engineering tasks in the business, e.g. Engineering Change, Quality topics, creation of internal processes and standards.
  • Keep us safe. Ensure Health and Safety requirements are fulfilled at all times. 

Describe the most complex/challenging aspects of the role

Understanding the customers need(s), managing internal and external requirements is a first key challenge, as is keeping these in view through the project lifecycle to launch and NPI.

Managing stakeholders and project cadence so that product development tasks and deliverables are made in a professional and timely manner.

Identifying and mitigating risk. Understanding risk attitudes and the views of others, and setting mitigation actions.  

Co-ordination with sales and manufacturing teams to see products are successfully launched.


Knowledge, skills and experience required (Essentials and Desirables):
  • Proficient in product design and use of CAD, Autodesk Inventor preferred (E)
  • Degree level (or qualified in a relevant engineering discipline (E)
  • Minimum 2 years R&D experience working in a manufacturing business (D)
  • Demonstrates strong decision-making skills (D)
  • Conversant with PLM systems; Engineering Change, Product Data Management, Release Procedures, Dynamics and advantage (E)
  • Experience using rapid prototyping techniques (D)
  • Confidence in analytical modelling. Skills in numerical modelling, FEA and CFD (E)
  • Ability to see the big picture and give attention to detail and accuracy (D)
  • A creative thinker. Explores options with merit, identifies advantageous solutions (D)
  • Knowledge of mechanical ventilation or fan-based products (D)
  • Project/task ownership experience and demonstrable drive to achieve (E)
  • Ability to work under pressure and to short timescales (E)
  • Strong organisational and interpersonal skills. Builds a team and builds trust (E)
